What is a Thumbnail?
A Thumbnail on YouTube is the small, clickable image that represents a video. It’s the first visual thing viewers see when browsing through videos, and it plays a crucial role in grabbing attention and enticing people to click and watch.
How do I use the Thumbnail Search Tool?
We’ve made finding thumbnail inspiration a breeze! You can find thumbnails by:
- Using the search bar
- Entering a video URL into the search bar
- Uploading your own picture
The results displayed will be the top performing thumbnails for your idea. At a glance you will see the total amount of views, the outlier score, and the title/thumbnail packaging combo that made these videos truly special.
Sorting Options
After searching for thumbnails you may sort them based on what's important to you. The sorting options are:
- Similarity: How similar they are to your search
- Outlier Score: How viral was this video? (compared to others in the channel)
- View count: How many views did the video get?
- Newest: Newer videos.
- Oldest: Oldest videos.
Having these options available will ensure you only see what’s important to you. Want to make sure the thumbnails have a very high outlier score? Sort by Outlier score. Want to only see the thumbnails with the most views? Sort by View count. These sorting options will allow you to customize your results and will help improve your thumbnail game.
Save your Thumbnail
Found a few thumbnails you’d like to study? No problem! Save your thumbnails to your collections folder by hovering over the thumbnail and clicking on the Save to collections button 
. Here you can also find a “search by thumbnail” button and a flag button. The report flag button will remove that specific thumbnail from your results and ask why it should be removed. The Search by thumbnail button will customize your results even further! Only thumbnails that closely match the thumbnail selected will be displayed.
Even more thumbnail stats!
For a deeper look at how the video performed you can click on any thumbnail. This will reveal a screen where you can download the thumbnail, review the rank by views or title changes if applicable. It will even show you similar thumbnails alongside the video performance graph. Here you can also copy the link video, save this to collections, or open the Viewstats profile of that specific channel.
